“Cheer up, emo kid!”
“Oh god…” Sonny muttered to himself, cursing his bad luck; was a five-minute break really so much to ask for? Being the frontman for a highly successful band at the age of 14, and being whisked away on a sudden Canadian tour, was stressful enough without being harassed by some obnoxious raver.
“I said cheer up.” The voice had an edge to it now, as something yellow was thrust into Sonny’s face. A plush toy? No, a backpack, just as yellow as the stranger’s ridiculous dye-job. “Man, what’s the fuck’s even wrong with you? Someone spit in your morning bowl of Em-O’s?”
“You’re not funny, man.” grumbled Sonny, the raver still chuckling at his own joke. “I’m in a band, we’re on tour here, and… “
”You’re in a band? Aren’t you still in grade school?” This remark was met with an angry glare, but he just grinned a goofy, lop-sided grin and continued. “I just make music with my computer. The guys on IRC say I might have something going… kinda like you’ve got the other guys in your band backing you up ‘n shit.”
Sonny stared blankly, trying to block out both the stranger’s misguided good intentions and the chill of the evening air. It was supposed to be summer, and it was so cold here already. He’d looked at a map and seen how far away Ontario was from California, but there’d been no real feeling of distance until that cold hit and he suddenly realised he was just another Lost Boy far from home.
And somehow, he didn’t feel sad about it. That was the thing; he’d felt like he was supposed to feel sad, like he should be moping around like that obnoxious raver seemed to think he was. But even though it was a little much to take in all at once, he actually kind of liked it. Seeing different worlds, seeing so many people who wanted to hear his voice, who felt the same feelings he’d poured into his lyrics…
“Well, I’m bored. I should go open up my computer and find out what the fuck’s stopping it from turning on.”
Sonny looked up to see a Pikachu backpack bobbing up and down, the rest of the raver already disappearing into the night. A ‘thankyou’ lined up in his throat, but… that kid hadn’t really done anything except given him a reason to tune him out, and think about other things. Probably hadn’t even seen the small smile that crossed his face before he wandered off to make music with computers.
